The Operations Coordinator will play an essential role in advancing the GDTA’s mission and contributing to the successful growth of the organization through effective operations management, trail program coordination, committee support, and communications. ABOUT THE GREAT DIVIDE TRAIL ASSOCIATION (GDTA)
The GDTA is a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining, preserving, and promoting the Great Divide Trail (GDT), one of the most rugged and scenic long-distance hiking trails in North America. The GDTA works closely with volunteers, land management agencies, and outdoor enthusiasts to ensure the GDT remains a sustainable and protected resource for hikers and adventurers.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Operations Coordinator plays a key role within the Great Divide Trail Association (GDTA), collaborating with the Executive Director to support the ongoing growth and smooth operation of GDTA’s programs. As the organization evolves, this role will assist with a variety of activities, contributing to capacity building and ensuring the efficient operation of different facets of the association. The Operations Coordinator will support the management of key initiatives, help facilitate communication across teams and committees, and contribute to the coordination of a variety of projects. In addition, the position will involve supporting outreach efforts, volunteer engagement, and providing assistance with daily operations as needed.

Priority will be given to candidates who are already active in the GDT community, as their involvement will bring valuable insight into the needs and dynamics of the trail community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administrative and Reporting Support
- – Support financial and operational reporting, ensuring that trail programs and projects are carried out within budget and on schedule.
- – Assist the Executive Director in tracking key performance indicators for trail maintenance and building programs, as well as other GDTA initiatives.
- – Help the Executive Director with document preparation related to land access agreements, environmental assessments, and regulatory requirements for trail work.
Volunteer Coordination and Recruitment
- – Support GDTA in recruiting, training, and coordinating volunteers for trail work, events, and other GDTA activities.
- – Assist in developing and implementing strategies for volunteer recruitment and engagement to ensure a diverse and committed volunteer base for trail programs and outreach efforts.
- – Help organize and facilitate volunteer training programs across various field-related roles, including trail maintenance, safety, and environmental stewardship.
Communications and Outreach
- – Coordinate GDTA’s social media platforms to promote the organization’s initiatives, engage the public, and nurture a strong online community.
- – Help develop, write, and distribute regular newsletters to keep stakeholders informed about GDTA’s activities, trail updates, volunteer opportunities, and events.
- – Collaborate with the Outreach Committee to support the development and execution of communication plans, including social media campaigns, newsletters, and other outreach efforts.
- – Assist in organizing outreach events and activities to raise awareness of GDTA’s mission and expand its network of supporters.
Trail Operations Support
- – Support the Trail Building & Maintenance Committee in ensuring field teams are effectively coordinated for trail maintenance and building activities, including logistics, equipment, safety protocols, and volunteer coordination.
- – Assist in trail planning efforts, collaborating with the Executive Director, the Trail Building & Maintenance Committee (TBMC), and other stakeholders to contribute to the development and implementation of sustainable trail routes and maintenance schedules.
- – Coordinate trip leader training in partnership with the TBMC, ensuring leaders are well-prepared to guide volunteer crews in trail work and safety practices.
- – Help develop trail work plans, aligning them with GDTA’s long-term goals for trail preservation, safety, and environmental responsibility.
Committee Coordination and Liaison
- – Act as a liaison between Committees, facilitating communication, supporting alignment on goals, and coordinating committee initiatives.
- – Provide support for committee meetings, ensuring that information is shared across teams and progress is tracked on key initiatives.
- – Assist in the coordination of committee-driven projects, supporting timelines and helping ensure objectives are met.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
A degree or certification in non-profit management, outdoor recreation, environmental sciences, communications, or a related field. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
Skills & Experience:
- – At least 5 years of experience in non-profit operations, outdoor program coordination, communications, or related fields.
- – Experience in volunteer coordination, trail operations, and communications is highly beneficial.
- – Previous involvement in event planning, community engagement, or outdoor leadership roles is an asset.
- – Experience or strong interest in social media management and outreach is a plus.
- – Ability to take initiative and contribute proactively to the development and execution of GDTA’s programs and initiatives.
- – Proficiency in project management and operational tools (e.g., Microsoft 365, Teams, etc.).
- – Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- – Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- – Excellent communication skills.
Not Required, But Considered an Asset:
- – GIS mapping skills.
- – Experience with budgeting and financial management.
- – Grant writing experience.
- – Experience in donor relations and fundraising.
- – Outdoor leadership skills, including familiarity with trail building and maintenance.
- – Event planning and coordination experience.
Other Requirements:
- – A personal vehicle and valid driver’s license, and the ability to travel to trail sites or events.
- – Wilderness First Aid certification or the willingness to obtain it.
- – Comfort with physical work and the ability to work in varying weather conditions.
- – Ability to participate in evening weekday committee meetings approximately 4x per month.
- – Participation in multi-day/overnight trail-building trips will be required, along with occasional travel for events throughout the year. Candidates must supply their own camping gear.
Position Details
Salary: $60,000–$70,000, depending on experience and qualifications. 40 hours/week. 3 weeks of annual earned vacation provided.
Duration: This is a full-time, contract position beginning late April until March 31, 2026, with the possibility of an extension based on available funding.
Location: This is a remote role with flexible hours. Most work will be done virtually, however the role is based in or near, Calgary, AB for in-person work and events.
